چکیده

Gas flaring is a combustion device to burn associated, unwanted or excess gases and liquids released during normal or unplanned over-pressuring operation in many industrial processes, such as oil-gas extraction, refineries, chemical plants, coal industry and landfills. Gas flaring is a significant source of greenhouse gases emissions. It also generates noise, heat and provided large areas uninhabitable. The World Bank reports that between 150 to 170 billion m of gases are flared or vented annually, an amount value about $ 30.6 billion, equivalent to one-quarter of the United States’ gas consumption or 30 % of the European Union’s gas consumption annually. Thus, a reduction or recover of gas flaring is a crucial issue. Therefore, there is a pressing need to measure flared gas by known its composition, distribution and volume, additionally, applied the suitable flare gas recovery system or disposal. This paper provides an overview of the gas flaring in industry and its composition, and its relevant environmental impacts. It also describes the flaring measurement techniques and the reduction of the flare gas by studying the different methods of flare gas recovery systems.

Environmental Pollution and Measurement of Gas Flaring

A flare is a combustion device that uses air or steam to burn associated, unwanted or excess gases and liquids released during production or by pressure relief valves during unplanned over-pressuring of plant equipment in many industrial operations, such as oil-gas extraction, refineries, chemical plants, coal industry and landfills. Several environmental problems caused by gas flaring such as ...

Gas Flaring and Venting Associated with Petroleum Exploration and Production in the Nigeria’s Niger Delta

Global flaring and venting of petroleum–associated gas is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions and airborne contaminants that has proven difficult to mitigate over the years. In the petroleum industry, poor efficiency in the flare systems often result in incomplete combustion which produces a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and i...

A Fifteen Year Record of Global Natural Gas Flaring Derived from Satellite Data

We have produced annual estimates of national and global gas flaring and gas flaring efficiency from 1994 through 2008 using low light imaging data acquired by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). Gas flaring is a widely used practice for the disposal of associated gas in oil production and processing facilities where there is insufficient infrastructure for utilization of the g...

Is living in a gas-flaring host community associated with being hypertensive? Evidence from the Niger Delta region of Nigeria

Background Researchers have linked gas flaring to climate change, the hastening of the epidemiological transition and an upsurge in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. We sought to determine if a relationship exists between residing in a gas-flaring host community and hypertension. Methods We conducted an analytical cross-sectional household survey among residents of 600 households i...

A global gas flaring black carbon emission rate dataset from 1994 to 2012

Global flaring of associated petroleum gas is a potential emission source of particulate matters (PM) and could be notable in some specific regions that are in urgent need of mitigation. PM emitted from gas flaring is mainly in the form of black carbon (BC), which is a strong short-lived climate forcer. However, BC from gas flaring has been neglected in most global/regional emission inventories...
